7850 kg/m³ for carbon steel. Change it for other materials.

Working

A = π × d² / 4 = π × 20² / 4 = 314.2 mm²

W = 3.142 × 10⁻⁴ m² × 6 m × 7,850 kg/m³ × 1 = 14.8 kg

Formula

W = A × L × ρ × n

W
total weight
A
cross-sectional area
L
length of one piece
ρ
density
n
number of pieces

Cross-sectional area by shape

Flat bar
A = b × t
Square bar
A = a²
Round bar
A = π d² / 4
Hexagonal bar (s across flats)
A = (√3 / 2) × s²
Pipe or round tube
A = π × t × (D − t)
Square hollow section
A = 4 t (a − t)
Rectangular hollow section
A = 2 t (h + b − 2t)
Equal angle
A = t (2a − t)
Unequal angle
A = t (a + b − t)

Assumptions

  • Nominal dimensions, uniform along the length.
  • Sharp corners: corner radii on hollow sections and root and toe radii on angles are ignored.
  • Density defaults to 7850 kg/m³, the nominal unit mass of carbon steel.

Limitations

  • Rolling tolerances and mill overweight are not included.
  • Cutting allowances, end preparation, holes and coatings are not included.
  • Hollow sections come out slightly heavy (their rounded corners are ignored) and angles slightly light (their root fillet is ignored); use the producer's table where exact weights matter.
  • For rolled beams and channels, use the published section tables rather than this calculator.
