Formula

W = L × B × t × ρ × n

W
total weight
L
length, B: width, t: thickness
ρ
density of the material
n
number of plates

Assumptions

  • Plates are rectangular, with no holes, cut-outs or bevels.
  • Dimensions are nominal; thickness is uniform across the plate.
  • Density defaults to 7850 kg/m³, the nominal unit mass of carbon steel.

Limitations

  • Rolling tolerances and mill overweight are not included.
  • Cutting allowances, scrap and coatings are not included.
  • For chequered plates and non-rectangular shapes, use the actual profile weight from the supplier.

References

  • Unit mass of steel, 7850 kg/m³: IS 800:2007, clause 2.2.4.1.
